Hulhumale´ Beach Clean – Swimming trip
To commemorate World Environment Day, the
students of Billabong High decided to go and clean an island that badly needed
a lot of its garbage to be removed.
At 6 am, the secondary students met at
Hulhumale´s terminal. One hour later and with the use of two ferries to take us
all, different groups of students were cleaning all around the island.
The students that formed the swimming team
were Zaha (Grade 11), Shafra (Grade 11), Mahfooz (Grade 10), Rabban (Grade 10),
Daniel (Grade 10), Vahan (Grade 10), Ahnaf (Grade 9), Shadhfa (Grade 9) and
Zuhura (Grade 8). With the help of Zuhura´s mom, we all went to the beach area
which is located 5 minutes away from the terminal and noticed a huge amount of rubbish
(mainly plastic bottles) covering most of the beach.
After seeing parts of a dead turtle, many dead
fish and a lot of unpleasant things, we lined up to send all the garbage into
one big pile which was later removed by a second group of Billabong students.
Once we were finished with the beach area, we went swimming to two different areas next to the terminal where we also practiced some free diving while removing the underwater garbage. By 10:30 the students were departing back to Male´ leaving a much better looking Hulhumale´ than some hours earlier.

Then we cleaned all the area and pilled the garbage.

| That mountain of garbage was later removed by another cleaning group. |
 |
| Although it was mainly plastic, we found many disgusting things. |

| The second cleaning group is now removing the rubbish. |
 |
| Some more cleaning. |
 |
| The mountain of rubbish is almost gone. |
 |
| Working hard. |
 |
| That was all the garbage we collected from around 25 meters of beachline. |
